shadow puppetry
:::
Shadow puppets may be persons, animals, props and scenery. Persons are classified as lead male, lead female, supporting male, old male, jester, official, male servant, gods and monster. They may also be classified into colors. Red is the noblest color, followed by green, and black is the lowest in rank. In most cases, personages with high status are painted in rich colors, while those with baser status were clothes in drab tones. Old people often bear the carved character “shou” (longevity) on their garments. Officials are distinguished for their jade belts. Male lead roles wear shoes while lead females are attired in long flowing skirts. Supporting males are differentiated into good and villain through their eyebrows and the colors of their faces. In most cases, smiles are depicted with raised lip corners and a frown with wrinkled foreheads.
